Eight years ago, the second Mars Exploration Rover mission (Oppportunity (MER-2) landed on the surface of Mars in the Meridiani Planum, near the equator of Mars, three weeks after the landing of its twin, Spirit (MER-1), on the opposite side of Mars. Designed for a primary mission life of 90 sols (Mars days, each approximately 27 hours 37 Earth days), Opportunity is still functioning eight years later.
