Featured Maps: Virgin America to Cancún (5 July 2010)

Last Tuesday, Virgin America announced plans to fly to Cancún from both San Francisco and Los Angeles, plus service from San Francisco to San José del Cabo.

Cancún seems like an odd choice due to its distance from California. Los Cabos (served via San José del Cabo) is about half the distance from San Francsico and the relatively short flight make it a popular vacation spot for Californians along with nearby Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta. For a more faraway tropical vacation most people on the West Coast of North America think of Hawaii, which is closer except from Los Angeles which is slightly closer to Cancún. Virgin America may see Cancún as a ripe new market from California but it seems like a long-shot.
